On Tuesday (25), Enel conducted an operation in Niterói with the support of the 76th Police Precinct and experts from the Carlos Éboli Criminalistics Institute. During the operation, they uncovered electricity theft at a bakery and a brothel.
At both locations, technicians found direct connections to Enel’s network without passing through a consumption meter. The property owners were arrested on the spot by police officers and released after paying bail.
Not only is electricity theft a crime, but it also harms the quality of service provided by the distributor and puts the population at risk, especially those who handle the electrical network. Illegal connections can cause short circuits and overload the electrical network, resulting in power outages.
